From other awesome folks!
One woman I have followed for years is Dani Dipirro and her Positively Present blog. She has regular freebies and I am always blown away by the light she brings to the world!
Meditation. Who would have thought you can get so much from so little? After four years, my patience, grace, and unconditional love have grown exponentially. I use the Calm app. They have sleep stories, music that you can read or work to, and little 5-minute life lessons! I can send you a 30-day free trial if you want one! Just email me at Ho***@he*********.com
MEDITATION, LEVEL 2: Becoming Supernatural by Dr. Joe Dispenza. Neuroscience + biochemistry + physics (prove) mystical experiences (via) meditation. While Dr. Dispenza has a great sales funnel platform ($25 meditations at the end of every chapter,) he also has a beautiful message. If we can change our energy, we can change our lives. Move over vision boards, there are Mind Movies now. And that will be $97. I’ve been doing the first meditation for a month now and I LOVE it!
The Amazing Career Project Course, Kathy Caprino. This 16-week virtual course was very connecting and heartening. The first half of the course was spent identifying my talents and limiting beliefs, some for the first time. The rest, as the name goes, was about charting a sound career path. I seriously love Kathy.
Melanie Weidner’s Cards. An amazing artist makes introspection a fun game! I pick one of these a couple of days a week. I focus my energy on the message. If you get a deck, I’d love to know what you think!
THE BOOKSHELF
Inspiring Books
Wolfpack by Abby Wambach. Now, what if I were to tell you that some of Abby’s 8 rules to change the game for women, were also the tenets that helped me speak up for myself in my failing marriage? Yep, this soccer legend is legit + worthy of giving copies to every righteous bitch in your life.
Funny Side Up by Rita Davenport (She also wrote my retro Sourdough Cookbook!) Yes, this woman grew up in similar surroundings to Dolly Parton. Yes, this woman had doubts and years of not knowing what to do. You know what else this woman had? Grit. Humility. Generosity. Forgiveness. Gratitude. Cornbread. And now this real-life rags-to-riches unabashed southern woman brings her stories to let you know that you can do it. too. Favorite Ritaism: “Be more, have more, learn more, and earn more so you can share more.”
The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks. Do you feel like there could be more for you, but aren’t sure what that is? Are you comfortable with what you have, where you’re at, but… ? Gay has boiled down identifying what Zone you’re living in, and gives you realistic tools to root out inner gremlins to get to living in your Zone of Genius all the time. Who’s in? I am.
Healing Tools
Codependents Anonymous: Yes, it’s a 12-step program. With lots of self-reflection, a workbook, and a sponsor if you want one. The goal: Healthy and Loving relationships. Who doesn’t want better relationships? That’s what I’m sayin’. Been in the program for over 7 years now. Haven’t regretted one meeting.
Don Miguel Ruiz: The Four Agreements: Don Miguel brings a small-yet-powerful message to us humans: if you can untangle yourself from what you “think” is your reality and adopt four mantras, your life will transform. I read this book while in depression. I trudged up from stuckness and adopted the teachings – and have never looked back. The book works.
Melodie Beattie: Journey to the Heart A dear friend gave me this daily meditation book at the start of my path to self-awareness. It was my only teacher for awhile, and it is a gentle start to look at glimpses of another’s life and how they pause to reflect and learn from it.
Lillian Rubin’s Intimate Strangers: My pastor gave me this book to try and understand how my husband and I got so far apart. This book gave me the language to begin to understand what happened in my marriage, what I could and couldn’t do about it.
Karyl McBride’s Will I Ever Be Good Enough? Let me be honest: my mom is a hard-core perfectionist. If you ever saw her sewing projects, you’d get it. The title, I think, was my life’s slogan. Yes, I understand it’s for daughters of narcissistic moms. This book helped me get to a place where I finally accepted and loved myself as enough.
Max Lucado: Fearless This was the first faith-based book I ever read that wasn’t the Bible. It provided me a beacon of brave light during the dark times in my divorce.
David Burns’ Feeling Good Workbook: Want to really get to know what you’re saying to yourself? I did and still do worksheets from this workbook when I am feeling depressed, anxious, or stuck. I’ve even photocopied them for my teenage son. Mr. Burns gives a simple & straight-forward method to identify and replace the crap you say to yourself!
Dale Carnegie: How to Win Friends & Influence People: I read & distilled this book during the pandemic, applied Dale’s wisdom to my 20th-century non-relationship with my ex, and we started talking cordially again! If I can resuscitate a bleak divorce desert into productive farmland, you can too!
Intuitive Sensitive People by Heidi Sawyer. Okay, so I’m not like a psychic or anything. But this book (that I won) is helping me understand that I’m more than just highly sensitive. I know a lot more than the feelings. And the more I practice stillness, the more I understand. Which is hard with kids at home and a hankering to make sourdough, know what I mean? Anyway, I’ve paused reading this… More to come…
Valerie Young’s The Secret Thoughts of Successful Women. I chatted with amazing courageous ladies in the Think Courageously Facebook Group about it. Surprising news I did not suffer from the impostor syndrome. However, I learned: my life was literally SCREAMING AT ME to leave fundraising and start writing and THAT’S WHY I never felt like I belonged. Anyway, if you feel your success is “only because they like me, I was in the right place at the right time, I just work harder than others, I don’t deserve this, It’s just a matter of time before I am found out, or Someone must have made a terrible mistake.” Then this is your chance for liberation, woman.
The Writer and Entrepreneur Bookcase
Jeff Goins, Real Artists Don’t Starve, You Are a Writer, Intentional Blog Course, Email Marketing Course, Write a Bestseller Course, Tribe Conference. So, yes, I’ve basically done everything one can do except for stalk coffee shops looking for him. Thank goodness for Covid. π He’s a magical, peculiar genius when it comes to helping writers.
Dawn Montefusco, Write Your True Story. Dawn is also coaching me on writing my first book in a course, One Short Book: The New Best Seller. This vulnerable, tattoed New-Yorker-turned-Portlandian is a poet, writer, and many levels of “coach”. In her book, she gets down and dirty about how a typewriter, a toxic mom and loving dad, and an empty bank account, got her to where she is today. And how you can bust it out and write your true story, too.
David Kadavy, The Heart To Start. Ever feel like you get stuck before you start? David has been there. I listened to this while on the stationary bike at the gym every day (pre-pandemic) for a month. He is so accessible. I had to really face the “why” I wasn’t writing. And then I started writing again.
Tim Grahl, Running Down a Dream. I saw him speak on the theme “What is your soul silently screaming to say out loud?” Boom. AND I love how raw and real he is about the personal, relationship, and distracting crap he slogged through to bring his entrepreneurial ship to sail. You want inspiration through resilience? This is your man.
Nir Eyal, Indistractable Indistractable is a superpower, and Nir tells you how to get there. This man breaks it all down: from the smartphones that take sleep away to the inner-chatter that keeps us unfocused. Seriously, Nir helped me plan out a calendar based on my values. So I’m now living according to my values. I’ve never felt so…liberated by having a schedule??!? And my teenage son has benefited tremendously from some of Nir’s lessons, too. His stuff legit works.
the War of Art by Steven Pressfield. Do you have 30 minutes? Do you like 1-paragraph chapters? Are you a creative person? Do you sometimes (or always) feel stuck? Have you ever procrasti-cleaned? If you answered yes to any of the above, this badass visionary wrote this book for you! (He also wrote it for me and every other creative.) This book is water for creative life.
Tribes by Seth Godin Our godfather of modern day marketing and snappy books that delight and inspire strikes again. Yes, he’s got 19 more bestsellers that are on my list, but this is the first one. If you’ve ever said to yourself “why should I do this, I’m sure other people have the same idea.” Then READ THIS F***ing book. It also gave me a number I felt I could do without quitting: 1,000. “One thousand fans will bring you enough attention and support to make a great living, to reach more people, to do great work…One thousand fans, true fans, forms a Tribe. “
Published by Chandler Bolt. This man is a self-publishing marketing machine. He has built a school around this book (read: funnel system into his high-end author support community that can take you from idea to bestseller). Honestly, it’s impressive. If you are an author looking for how to grow your platform from a book and how to market a book, this book is for you. There are lots of freebies with this book that will get you introduced to the basic framework, from start to finish.
